The SASSU  system is the first fully-automated stereotacticinstrument for small animals. Especially developed for theprecise insertion of probes into the rat brain, it offers a newdimension for brain research.The system consists of a 5 axes micromanipulator to target functional areasin the brain with high precision. Each stage is equipped with a high-precision motor and optical encoder to ensure positioning accuracy.The design of the manipulator allows the user to automatically position aninstrument  along the three cartesian axes (A/P, DV, and lateral axis) and torotate about the lateral and anterior-posterior axes.SASSU offers an easy and repeatable adaption of different probes, rangingfrom microelectrodes to microdialysis instruments. SASSU readily integratesa stereotactic frame underneath the mechanical setup.A specially designed software offers an easy-to-use interface for(a) surgical planning based on atlas information (A/P, DV, and lateral coordinates),(b) intraoperative registration by setting Lambda and Bregma landmarks,and(c) insertion control with a desired velocity, step size, and acceleration.If desired customized solutions can be developed.
