Instrument panel assembly

Efficient assembly process for car dashboards using CFRP grippers

Development and realisation of an automatic assembly system for instrument panels

For the automatic assembly of car cockpits, IBG has realised a system that uses a robot to position, assemble and check a dashboard in relation to the car body in several steps to ensure process reliability. For a safe gripping process, a camera system mounted on the robot measures the position of the fixed points of the instrument panel in the first step. In the downstream process, a 3D camera system measures the screw-on points in the car body and then, based on the measured data, moves into the vehicle with the cockpit to be installed. As soon as the robot is in the vehicle, a guide device is automatically positioned to move the steering shaft through the bulkhead into the engine compartment without collision and then automatically move the instrument panel into its final position. After positioning, the dashboard is screwed into place with four integrated screw units and aligned transversely to the direction of travel using measuring probes before final tightening.

The decisive advantage of this system realised by IBG is its high durability due to the CFRP grippers used with mounted aluminium assemblies. The camera system integrated for the precise assembly process enables the robot to independently determine and implement the correct position.
